September Wine Harvest Frieze by Clodion (ca. 1738-1814)

In this charming relief. Italian cherubs, called putti, take up the work of the grape harvest to provide the sweetest of wines for the festival of Bacchus. The grape harvest was also a Medieval and Renaissance image of autumn, often used to represent September.

 

The original frieze, from which the replica mold was cast, resides in a Florence museum.’
